‘Ishq Express’ Review: A Modern Love Story Laced With Drama, Madness, and Train Rides!

Amazon miniTV series Ishq Express has been written and directed by Tanmai Rastogi and Saurabh George Swamy, respectively. The new series stars popular actors Ritvik Sahore and Gayatrii Bhhardwaj in lead roles as Aarav Aggarwal and Tanya Basu, respectively. The story follows the two of them and their unguarded exploration of a this crazy, frantic, beautiful and bumpy journey called life. We get conversations between the two, their connection, their bond, their madness and of course, the train rides.

Diving Into The Plot

“The journey is over, but the story isn’t!” exclaimed one of Ishq Express’ quotes, and I genuinely believe that this is the perfect description for the well-displayed premise of this three-part miniseries. The story introduces us to Aarav, a small-town boy who is trying his level best to blend into the busy city life of Mumbai. On the other hand, we meet Tanya, a cheerful, lively and confident city girl who isn’t scared to dare and live her life freely.

Aarav is a person who seems to be going with the flow as he has no clue what to do with his life. In doing so, he decided to withdraw from his university and go back home to Jamshedpur. Cluelessly, he hopped on the train home and is really bummed to realise that he had to share his berth as RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) passengers but, he had no clue what lay ahead of him was going to change his life.

He walked ahead and caught a glimpse of Tanya, just sitting there and listening to music and it was like his heart leapt. Now, I wouldn’t say that it was love at first sight but then again, even I, as a viewer, could tell that he felt something that he hadn’t ever felt before. Tanya felt something too, as she smiled and welcomed him. But then again, it began with uncomfortable silence for the both of them, to begin with, but once they relaxed and started talking, they were able to establish a connection over a cigarette and this forged a bond that was absolutely unexpected for both of them.

Ishq Express is a mushy romance fest through and through

Ritvik and Gayatrii’s characters are brought to life with an engaging storyline, pooling in great talents in front of and behind the lens. The actors have without a doubt, nailed their roles. I mean. Ritvik IS Aarav for me from now on and of course, Gayatrii’s smile has definitely etched a mark in my heart.

Ishq Express starts and ends on the train which makes it all the more interesting. It’s like the show takes us on a heart-warming journey and then, it comes full circle.

The series covers the importance of love as well as the importance of friendship and the clear line between them that probably shouldn’t be crossed-this is indeed a valuable lesson. We have all had our fair share of travel fantasies and these crushes that we sometimes see on trains and during flights so the idea of chasing this fantasy makes the storyline, relatable. Also, it’s an absolute reminder of the golden college days.

It also covers the aspect of madness that comes with love. Aarav dares to leave his future, his family and even his own decisions behind in order to give this newfound feeling that he shares with Tanya, a chance. In a way, this is inspiring for everyone who has ever felt the strong power of love. The very reiteration of the message that ‘love is worth the wait’ made this series, worth the watch.

Finally, for any romantic drama, the background music plays an integral role and Rajarshi Sanyal’s music, especially the song ‘Ek Mai Hun,’ was beautiful, melodious and able to merge perfectly with the storyline. A major kudos to the creators, for that.
