‘Heropanti 2’ Trailer: We Have Reasons To Believe This Tiger Shroff Film Is Basically Harry Potter. And We’re Not Happy

Blimey! I saw the trailer for Heropanti 2, because, well, it is my job to do such things. Besides, I thought Tiger Shroff’s sex appeal went up a little after War for me, so I wanted to give the man a chance. And what did they do with this generosity? Air-kicked me with it, that’s what! Two minutes into the trailer, which I already was annoyed with except for Tiger looking smouldering, and I see him and Nawazuddin Siddiqui on a giant chess set that looks scarily close to the wizard chess set from Harry Potter And The Sorceror’s Stone! Yes, the same one that Ron Weasley kicked ass on, and in the words of Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, gave us “the best-played game of wizard’s chess Hogwarts has ever seen”! I forced myself to finish the rest of the trailer but if you know me, I was wearing an expression the entire time that would make Severus Snape look tame. Ye kya hai yaar?

I’ve kinda stopped expecting total originality from Bollywood movies, especially these big masala entertainer ones. But I have this beef to pick with Tiger Shroff. The boy’s talented, but for the love of God, can he pick one original film? Either he is remaking cult songs like Dus Bahane and ruining the hook step while doing it. Or his film posters are lifting Keanu Reeves looks from John Wick. And ab kuch nahi bacha toh bacchon ke films mein see bhi ‘inspiration’ le liya? I mean I get it, you can get inspired for your set dec, but come on! The transfigured wizard chess set is possibly one of the most iconic sequences in a billion-dollar book and movie franchise that is obsessively loved. Thoda inconspicuous film see lift nahi kar sakte the aap? If we wanted to see a Hindi dub of it, we would’ve just watched it on Pogo na? Besides, I don’t think that’s how chess is played. It’s the one game where brains, not brawn are to be used, guys. Don’t ruin that, please. If we wanted action in chess, we’d watch The Queen’s Gambit.

What makes me so sure of this ‘inspiration’ is the fact that Nawaz bhai’s character, Laila (Also, WTF is that name now?) is pretty much like this untouchable baddie who does some magician tricks. And I have a nagging suspicion that Tiger Shroff’s Bablu (You’re killing me now, guys.) has to overcome this obstacle course of sorts to get to this guy, much like Harry did when he had to reach the Philosopher’s Stone in the first book/movie, and then encounter Voldemort. I’ll be happy to be proven wrong, but I cannot shake off the image of Tiger kicking those chess pieces and Nawaz hiding next to one. It’s just too much of a similarity.

But wait, the issues with the trailer don’t just end there. Much like Hermione, Tara Sutaria needs to really sort out her priorities. Does she just repeatedly want to play the hero/villain’s sidekick and then either die or get kidnapped and used as bait to lure the good guy in? She sounds annoying in the 3.5-minute trailer and I have a feeling there is not more to her than what we see. It’s frankly disappointing.

And finally, what’s also disappointing is that Nawazuddin Siddiqui used that scary laugh as a character trait for one film, ONE FILM, and now it is being imposed on us in every film where he plays a baddie to an action hero.

I mean, I am excited to see what AR Rahman has cooked up for the music of this film. And hands down, the action looks awesome, that’s a given. But I don’t know why we cannot have an intelligent, sharp, action film that does not rely on the good guy taking his shirt off and the bad guy being more of a joke than scary, and the girl being thrown in as an afterthought because sexy lagega. But it’s not. The only thing that looks sexy here is Tiger Shroff.

But we’ve all seen this before ad nauseam. Heropanti copy karne mein nahi, original honi mein hai.
