Hailey Bieber Sued For Trademark Infringement Over New Skincare Line

Celebrities and their latest love for launching their own brands have become a frequent event these days. From Kylie Jenner to Katrina Kaif, any name you take and they probably have a brand. And the newest addition to this long list is Hailey Bieber. The model announced the launch of her beauty label–Rhode. With a variety of categories that have been launched under the name, Hailey has been advertising her new venture with all the jazz.

But wait, the kahaani here has a twist. According to the latest reports, two fashion creators have sued Hailey for apparently using the name ‘Rhode,’ which is the exact name of their co-owned small business. Run by two college roommates who curated a successful clothing line, designers Purna Khatau and Phoebe Vickers have now filed a lawsuit against Hailey’s new skincare line in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. In order to protect their 8-year-old brand from any loss, the co-owners have allegedly spoken about the confusion Hailey’s brand creates by using the ‘Rhode’ trademark. The label deals in high-end clothing and jewellery targeting “feminine, confident and well-travelled women,” as stated by the lawsuit.

Furthermore, the co-owners of the clothing line revisited Hailey’s statement in the Forbes story which talked about a “world of media that likes to perpetuate women against women.” Responding to what they said, it’s now her who chooses to use it to squash a woman and minority co-founded brand, that definitely doesn’t have the power to compete with Bieber’s fame and popularity. The lawsuit further talked about the hardships faced by the co-owners while building a brand, that today has found consumers in Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, and Beyonce to name a few. It also revealed how Hailey attempted to buy the rights to the name from them four years ago, but they declined.

The case has been filed under trademark infringement and has requested the court to block Hailey from selling or marketing anything under the name. Additionally, the lawsuit also talked about the importance of court intervention, in fighting against a celebrity with close to 45 million Instagram followers. Ever since its launch, on June 15, Hailey’s Rhode has been receiving love from the internet and her celebrity friends–Kylie, and Kendal Jenner, amongst others. Well, Hailey hasn’t responded to the lawsuit. Hence, the judgement is yet to be made.
