Gulshan Devaiah’s Twitter Thread About Nepotism Is A Must-Read For Those Trolling Star Kids

Gulshan Devaiah’s Twitter Thread About Nepotism Is A Must-Read For Those Trolling Star Kids

Every time a movie or a series’ announcement is made, most people openly disregard it for not representing anyone and term it to be regressive. Now, pair that up with the nepotism debate in India and voilá! you have people finding faults in every aspect of that movie or series. I mean, isn’t that what’s been happening ever since a small teaser of The Archies starring Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, Agastya Nanda, and more was released? Let’s be real here, there are more, greater problems with the entertainment industry than just nepotism. In fact, this is exactly an argument (and many other arguments) that was put forth by Gulshan Devaiah who shared his thoughts on Twitter regarding the whole evergreen nepotism debate.

On May 17, Badhaai Do actor Gulshan Devaiah tweeted a thread where he talks about the forever ongoing debate on nepotism and gives his opinion. He says that the field of Arts cannot have a merit system because it is one of the most subjective fields ever and sadly but truly people are picked based on subjective opinions.

Gulshan Devaiah in his tweet said, “Opinion: The nepotism debate harnesses the angst & disdain that many have from within & outside the Hindi entertainment industry to serve the interests of a few who use it to settle personal scores. This business is tough & very unfair but nepotism is not its greatest problem.”

Giving his opinion further on nepotism, Gulshan Devaiah presents an example of an actor whose major insecurities as well as anxiety stems from the very need for opportunities. He goes on to say that there are few of the privileged ones who supposedly have it easier but that’s just an illusion that has been created and amplified by those people and peers’ opinions that are based on their individual and collective disappointments.

Speaking about the business side of the industry and how nepotism fits in, the actor says that a producer has every right to capitalise on the public interest in a star kid. And it’s not as though this method is full-proof, it has its downfalls. Gulshan Devaiah also talks about how film production is a private business and not merit-based like education, sports, etc.

Gulshan Devaiah further talks about how nepotism in Arts is there because the field is a subjective one. In his tweet, he said, “The Arts cannot have a system based on merit because it’s the most subjective of fields & people are picked for an opportunity based on subjective opinions. Talent, experience, work ethic etc. do play a major part but it’s still a subjective opinion that create the opportunities.”

In his next tweet, Gulshan Devaiah talks about the nature of the film business and how it’s very tough. Just being a regularly working actor is an achievement rather than being rich and famous. He says that people in the Hindi film industry also have to find their way to constantly find their way through this very “subjective & judgemental business” since even audiences judge.

Gulshan Devaiah goes on to say that success is far off, it is majorly about survival. But it isn’t all that bad as one has an aptitude for learning, gets a strong character, and knows how to handle disappointments well. He concludes his thread saying, “Those who can’t end up as fodder for “some” to use for their self serving interests. Aap ka kuch nahin hoga lekin woh loog aap ke angst ka bharpoor upyog karenge by making you feel that you are not where you are because of nepotism!”

Honestly, I agree with him. The whole issue of nepotism has been blown out of proportion just because it serves some people’s agenda.
