Arooj Aftab Creates History, Becomes First Pakistani Woman To Win A Grammy. We Are So Proud Of Her!

As you know, we just witnessed the biggest night in music aka the Grammy Awards 2022 and it was so fun and memorable for all the good reasons. And it was also memorable because Grammy decided that representation matters and we totally support it. Speaking of representation, Arooj Aftab just bagged her first-ever Grammy trophy and created history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to win the prestigious award. So iconic!

On Sunday, singer Arooj Aftab won the Grammy Award in the Best Global Performance category for her song ‘Mohabbat’. She has become the first Pakistani woman to win the award and we are so proud of her. She was also nominated for Best New Artist which was won by singer Olivia Rodrigo.

In her acceptance speech, Arooj mentioned her fellow nominees and expressed her gratitude to all the people who helped her make the album. “I think I’m gonna faint. Wow, thank you so much. I feel like this category in and of itself has been so insane. Burna Boy, Wizkid, Femi Kuti, Angélique Kidjo—should this be called Best World Music Performance? I feel like it should be called ‘yacht party category.’ But, anyway, thank you so much to everyone who helped me make this record, all my incredible collaborators, for following me and making this music I made about everything that broke me and put me back together. Thank you for listening to it and making it yours,” she said.

Take a look:

After the announcement, many people congratulated the musician including Pakistani actress Mahira Khan. Mahira shared a tweet that read, “So so proud! Shine on you crazy star @arooj_aftab (emojis).”
