‘Gangubai Kathiawdi’ Gets Amazing Response From Thailand, Becomes Most-Watched Film In The First Five Weeks
Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi received a great response in India. Alia’s performance was critically acclaimed. But the craze for Alia’s Gangubai character was not limited to India only. The movie when released in Thailand, legit created a Bollywood fever among the Thai audience. A few days back Alia Bhatt had posted many stories on Instagram where many Thai women recreated Alia’s Gangubai look, and also danced to the movie’s song. The overwhelming response from Thailand became quite clear from the stories.

With the presence of OTT platforms, access to Indian movies has become easier for the Thai audience. Gangubai Kathiawadi remained among the top 10 on Netflix for the first five weeks in Thailand, and for the first two weeks, it remained o the most-watched film on Thai Netflix. A veteran Bangkok-based producer Kulthep Narula said that no other Indian movie has ever received such a great response, as per an Al Jazeera article. Elaborating on the same, he further said that when many social media influencers started talking about the movie, others wanted to follow the league and know what the movie was about. The producer shedding light on the same also gave credit to social media for increasing the popularity of Gangubai Kathiawadi among the Thai audience, because they are one of the highest users of the Internet.

The empowering story had other reasons too for its popularity in Thailand. Like India, prostitution is illegal in Thailand as well. Therefore a cultural similarity and common narratives also added to the popularity of the film, said a research scholar per the article.
