Female Characters In ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ That Are Anything But Ordinary

If you’ve read any of the stuff I’ve written, you must have a pretty basic idea that one of my major personality traits is being a weeb. Having said that, I have watched a few K – Dramas and I’m not going to lie, I have enjoyed them. However, the one that I couldn’t help but follow was Extraordinary Attorney Woo. When I heard that there was a K – Drama about a female attorney who has autism spectrum disorder, I couldn’t help but be intrigued. And after my Instagram algorithm kept feeding my curiosity with wholesome moments from the show, I started watching it. And my oh my do I not regret it! The first season ended yesterday and I don’t know what to do with my Wednesday and Thursday nights anymore. But the one thing that stood out to me about Extraordinary Attorney Woo was the female characters. I believe this K – Drama is an ode to brilliantly written women and female relationships. All the women in the show are independent in their own right and forces to be reckoned with. From being wholesome rays of sunshine to cunning, power-hungry conspirators, this show highlights a range of women that you can’t help but love. Here is why I love all Extraordinary Attorney Woo women:

1. Woo Young Woo

“My name is Woo Young Woo, whether it is read straight or flipped. Kayak, deed, rotator, noon, racecar, Woo Young Woo.” She is the protagonist of the Extraordinary Attorney Woo and is the most adorable ray of sunshine ever! She is Korea’s first attorney who has autism spectrum disorder. Actress Park Eun Bin has done such a brilliant job playing a person on the spectrum. What I enjoy about Woo Young Woo’s character is that being on the autism spectrum isn’t her personality trait. She is a genius who has proved time and again that she is a capable attorney with her creative thinking and an excellent memory. I also love that her love life does not dictate her personal life or career. She also has some major character development throughout the season while staying true to her original personality which is something I loved about the way she was written. Despite living with her father, Young Woo continually becomes more and more independent throughout the season and turns into the blunt but cute lawyer we have come to love!

2. Choi Su Yeon

Played by Ha Yoon Kyung, Choi Su Yeon is a ray of “spring sunshine” as Woo Young calls her. She is Woo Young’s colleague and college mate. While she initially comes off as cold towards our protagonist but is a kindhearted and warm human being who genuinely cares for others. She’s also unknowingly extremely protective of Woo Young and stands up for her constantly, opens bottes for her and always physically protects her whenever a stressful situation comes up. The progression of their relationship is one of the best things about Extraordinary Attorney Woo where she goes from trying to treat Young Woo like a competitor to being one of her major support systems at Hanbada. She’s also a no-nonsense woman who calls out things as they are and stands up for what’s right even if it’s at her own expense. Also, she’s an all time mood: from constantly bantering with their colleague Kwon Min Woo to making an asshole pay for an expensive bottle of alcohol she bought, Su Yeon is a woman to be reckoned with.

3. Dong Geu Ra Mi

“Woo to the Young to the Woo! Dong to the Geu to the Ra Mi! HAH!”. Dong Geu Ra Mi, played by Joo Hyun Young, is Woo Young’s best friend from high school and is as eccentric as they come. With her coloured hair, overdramatic gestures and boisterous personality, Geu Ra Mi is a complete sensory contrast to Woo’s awkward and beige self. However, opposites definitely attract in their case as they are two high school misfits who found refuge in each other.  How they function together is for you to watch but rest assured that their dynamic will have you craving for a female bestie as extra, over the top and supportive as Geu Ra Mi.

4. Han Seon Young

Now we’re getting to the juicy bits of Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Essayed by Baek Ji Won, Han Seon Young is the CEO of Hanbada, the law firm Woo Young works for.  She’s the first to show faith in Woo after the latter fails to get hired anywhere for 6 months despite her perfect scores due to her being on the spectrum. Unlike our previous women, Seon Young’s character keeps lurking in grey areas making the viewer question her intentions. However, her rivalry with Taesan (a rival law firm’s) CEO is what adds a lot of drama and politics to Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Also, can we just appreciate the representation of a woman leading a top law firm in Korea? While she might come across as cunning, I love that she’s not the caricature of a typical “nice woman” and uses dirty politics to get what she wants which isn’t unheard of, in her field. As they say, “don’t hate the player, hate the game”.

5. Tae Su Mi

Tae Su Mi is the CEO of Taesan and Han Seon Young’s infamous rival. She’s a brilliant lawyer who was passed down the law firm by her father and will do whatever she can to protect everything she has built. Su Mi is intelligent, perceptive, cunning, selfish and shrewd who, like Seon Young, will use whatever tactics she can to get what she wants. I love that Extraordinary Attorney Woo has two powerful female characters who constantly compete with one another to one-up each other as is shown in the case of many powerful male characters previously.
