Emma Thompson Says Her First Nude Scene At 62 Was Challenging Because Of The Expectations About Women’s Bodies

Thanks to the beauty standards set by the entertainment industry, we have unrealistic, dreadful demands when it comes to a woman’s body. I believe that it gets especially worse for women who are ageing like fine wine. I mean, look at actresses like Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson who have aged so gracefully and done some really creditable work but yet, are trolled and slammed for showing their bodies. In fact, Emma Thompson addresses this issue and talks about her first fully Nude scene at 62. She talks about how the entire scene was even more challenging because of the dreadful demands that are expected from women’s bodies.

Speaking about how they filmed the scene, Emma Thompson said, “(Director) Sophie (Hyde), Dary, and I rehearsed entirely nude and talked about our bodies, talked about our relationship with our bodies, drew them, discussed the things that we find difficult about, things we like about them, described one another’s bodies.”

The Love Actually actress goes on to talk about that even though after so much preparation and being considerate while approaching such an intimate, sensitive scene, it was challenging to do at the age of 62. And this was especially the case because of the dreadful demands placed on a woman to meet a certain body type.

The actress says, “Nothing has changed in the dreadful demands made upon women in the real world but also in acting.” Furthermore, the Sense and Sensibility actress says that the obsession with being thin is still the same as it was previously and in fact, believes that it is much worse now.

The British actress says that even though the whole process of shooting her first fully nude scene was difficult, she doesn’t think that she would have been able to do it at an earlier point in her long, elaborate career. Emma Thompson added, “I don’t think I could’ve done it before the age that I am. And yet, of course, the age that I am makes it extremely challenging because we aren’t used to seeing untreated bodies on screen.”

And I don’t think truer words have been said previously from an actress. Old men roaming shirtless in movies is something that we’re so used to but when an aged woman shows off skin, we somehow are disgusted/grossed out by it, why? Why do we want aged actresses to look young? Why are we so opposed to seeing them aged? Why is there a shelf-life for actresses and not actors? Questions we all need to think about.
