Deepika Padukone On Surviving Covid-19 Says ‘I Looked Unrecognisable’

Covid-19 can take a toll on your body and surprisingly mental health as well. Experiencing the after-effects of the virus, can at times be long-term and hard to battle with. While the previous two years witnessed millions of lives getting affected by Covid-19, it has also observed a visibly disturbed mental health owing to the consecutive drill of being locked at home. Talking about a similar experience and her struggles amid the recovery, actress Deepika Padukone took the centre stage to share her battle with the virus. Being one of the many celebrities who tested positive for Covid-19 last year, the actress got infected during her trip to Bangaluru to meet her family.

Sharing about her post Covid recovery, she said in an interview, “I think Lockdown one was very, very different. It was all of us trying to figure what had come upon us, and trying to understand how to navigate our lives around this new wave. Lockdown two was also very different because everyone in my family, including me, had Covid at the same time.”

She further added, “Life after Covid changed for me because physically, I was unrecognisable completely… I think (due to) the medication I was given, the steroids that I was put on. So Covid in itself was weird, your body feels different, your mind feels different. I felt that when I had the illness it was still okay but after that, I needed to take two months off work because my mind wasn’t working. The phase for me was very, very difficult.”

While the first wave was definitely a less-terrifying experience for people across the globe, the second wave infused a sense of terror. The Chhapaak actress also revealed how the pandemic changed her fundamentally in many ways. Talking about the importance of keeping a check on your mental health, Deepika Padukone is often credited with breaking the stigma around mental health and founded the Live Love Laugh Foundation in 2015 to create awareness about the same. Talking about which she also shared, “profession can often turn from being pleasurable to pressurising and it is when I draw the line in terms of schedules. And I think I have realised to find this work-life balance because I don’t intend to burn out. In our country it is somehow considered unprofessional, taking leaves or asking time for yourself, it is perceived as not hard-working enough. And I disagree, because how are you gonna replenish, how are you going to put energy back into your work if you don’t live life…life is happening while you’re also building your career and maybe we forget that. I’m different as an actor, and I’m different as a person. I’ve evolved.”
