Bhumi Pednekar Says Labelling Actors As ‘Hero’ Or ‘Heroine’ Is Outdated And Regressive

When you talk about the film industry, there are a lot of things that have changed over the years. Actors – especially female actors – have started talking and raising questions about the pay disparity that takes place. In fact, female actors have also started pushing for movies and roles that have a strong female character. However, a lot of changes still need to be done. In fact, I believe that there are not enough movies with strong female protagonists yet. And trust me, I’m not the only one. Even Bollywood actor Bhumi Pednekar agrees with me. Recently, in an interview, she spoke about a lot of things related to the film industry including the fact that we need more movies with female leads, and labelling actors as ‘hero’ and ‘heroine’ is outdated. And I agree!

Bhumi Pednekar in an interview expressed her wish of having more movies with female leads in Bollywood. According to her, films with female protagonists are what we need as of now and there is no substitute for it.

The Dum Laga Ke Haisha actress agreed that more movies are being made with female leads, but she believes that the number of such movies needs to increase so as to affect social change. Bhumi Pednekar further added that she hopes that “meatier roles” are written for women in the film industry so that it can enforce a change of mindset that the society has of women.

As per reports, the 32-year-old actress says that she always wanted to be a part of movies that have a message and portray women correctly. Bhumi Pednekar said, “I have always wanted my films to be different and unique, preferably with a message and most importantly, portray women correctly. I’m glad such projects have always come my way and I thank the filmmakers for entrusting me with their vision to play these powerful, resilient and dignified women on screen.”

Talking about the labels of ‘hero’ and ‘heroine’ that are put on actors, Bhumi Pednekar stated, “People need to look at the terms ‘hero’ and ‘heroine’ in a gender-neutral way, and not from the lens of Bollywood. If someone asks me who my ‘hero’ is, I’ll say, it’s my mother. I wouldn’t call her the ‘heroine’ of my life, would I?”

Not going to lie, I agree with her. We need more and more movies that show women as leads and also portray them correctly. Honestly, gone are the days when a woman would just be a damsel in distress waiting for her ‘hero’ to come and save her. Women are so much more than that and it’s high time the film industry recognises that.
