Dia Mirza, Anushka Sharma And Deepika Padukone Wore Classic Red Banarasi Silk Sarees. We Talk About Why This Is A Favourite

Every woman’s wardrobe consists of superfluous items that include some chic styles, classic LBDs and denims, Indian wear for those impromptu pujas and cousin’s wedding and then there’s some regular stuff. Mine is the same. However, there’s one fashion piece I can’t wait to add to my closet and that is a rich Banarasi saree. I have a couple of sarees that I have hoarded in the past five or six years but the timeless silk drape is still on my wishlist. The fine silk, exquisite zari work and subtle sheen makes this clothing piece an absolute keeper and worthy of investment. That’s basically why it remains the most loved occasion wear for us and celebrities alike. In fact, there was a time when a bridal trousseau was considered without a red Banarasi saree. It was one of the things that was gifted to the bride by her family and was the most coveted bridal outfit. However, the opulent saree is back in vogue and Dia Mirza wearing a Banarasi saree for her wedding is proof enough.

The former beauty queen tied the knot with Vaibhav Rekhi on Monday and her choice of bridal outfit was stunning. While everyone was contemplating if she was going to pick a Sabyasachi lehenga or a Manish Malhotra number like other celebrity brides, she ditched the lehenga and wore a beautiful red Banarasi saree by fashion label Raw Mango instead. The gorgeous silk saree in bright red featuring golden zari work is from the brand’s latest festive collection ‘Moomal’. She wore a lightweight, sheer dupatta over her head that had a sleek minimal border. She styled the look with polki and gold jewellery, red bindi and a strand of gajra in her bun.

We love that she brought the red Banarasi saree back to life as the bridal attire. We had almost forgotten how plush and rich the saree looks, amidst the pastel lehengas and minimal bridal wear that are in vogue right now. Plus, not only as a wedding outfit, a Banarasi saree is so versatile a piece that you could wear it for any traditional event. Yes, even a red one! You don’t exactly have to get married to wear a red Banarasi saree. A lot of celebrities have donned the royalesque six yard at promotional events, festivals and small ceremonies and totally pulled it off. It’s all about how you style it. Here are some Bollywood celebrities, other than Dia Mirza, who wore the red and golden Banarasi saree and proved that nothing could be as classic as this luxurious drape.

Vidya Balan’s fondness for sarees isn’t hidden but she seems to gravitate a tad bit more to the handcrafted drapes. She loves a Banarasi saree so much, she even wore one for her wedding. However, that wasn’t the only time she wore a red Banarasi. She wore a red Banarasi silk saree from Raisin Global for Navratri and it was the most stunning festive look we had seen. She wore golden chandbalis with the saree and kept her minimal makeup to keep it understated.

Another ardent saree lover from Bollywood is Deepika Padukone for whom a red Banarasi silk saree is a constant. She wore one on her first wedding anniversary to visit a temple, for book launches, for Diwali last year and even for the promotions of her movie Padmaavat the year before that. She just can’t get enough. We are sure her wardrobe is filled with red silk sarees which we would want to raid. She often teams the look with minimal gold jewellery and a bun.

Anushka Sharma set a bunch of fashion and beauty trends as a bride and one of them was wearing a red Banarasi saree with a sindoor-filled hair partition. This look is still being recreated by brides over three years later. This Sabyasachi saree was a vermilion red and featured intricate zari work, thick border and motifs all in gold. She wore an exquisite choker necklace made with uncut diamonds and jhumkas, also from Sabyasachi.

Aishwarya Rai

Right after her wedding, Aishwarya wore a red Banarasi saree to visit the Siddhivinayak Temple with her new hubby. From a newly wed to a mother now, her love for a red Banarasi is still unfazed. She wore this red silk saree with silver thread work and pink rose motifs by designer duo Swati and Sunaina for a formal lunch meeting with French President. She wore kundan jewellery with it and adorned her hair with, you guessed it, fresh roses!
