8 Countries That Have Legalised Same-Sex Marriage In The Last 5 Year. Love Is Really Taking Over The Globe!

Marriage is a joyous union, a proclamation of love to the world. But somehow society tries to control whom you can and cannot love and hence, in most countries, legal marriage is allowed between a male and female only. Same-sex marriages are not allowed as they are considered illegal and unnatural. But, if getting married is the commitment for life to the one you love and love has no bounds, we should be allowed to marry whomever we love. That makes sense, doesn’t it?

This concept, however, is being slowly acknowledged by some countries, the latest country to join the right side is Cuba. The country legalised same-sex marriages, recently, and it’s one more small victory of love over hate. With increasing awareness and growing acceptance, in just the last 5 years, eight countries have shown progressive thinking and given people the freedom to marry whoever they want irrespective of their gender by legalising same-sex marriages. Wondering which countries these are? Here’s a list, just for you.

8 Countries Which Have Legalised Same-Sex Marriage In The Last 5 Years

1. Malta

Malta is a predominantly Roman Catholic country and yet they have managed to legalise same-sex marriages in 2017 itself. This is the latest evidence of the transformation of Malta, a once-conservative nation of about 440,000 people where even divorces were considered illegal until 2011.

2. Germany

Germany became the first country in Central Europe to legalise same-sex marriage in 2017. To enter into marriage in Germany there is no need for a residence or permanent residence. Therefore you can get married during a holiday in Germany.

3. Australia

Australia legalised same-sex marriage in 2017 with overwhelming support. It was a triumph of love and democracy after almost 22 failed attempts. It was a beautiful display of victory and love.

4. Austria

Even Austria joined the list as its highest court ruled the earlier existing laws as “discriminatory” and joined the other European nations by legalising same-sex marriages from 2019.

5. Taiwan

When Taiwan joined the right side, it became the first State in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage in 2019. There are more than 5,800 registered same-sex couples in the country and they all celebrated this win with pomp and show.

6. Costa Rica

Costa Rica ended up becoming the trailblazer in Central America by legalising same-sex marriages in 2020. This was a victory against the conservative section of the country that played the role of an obstacle. This was a true victory for love.

7. Switzerland

Switzerland became one of the last countries in Western Europe to legalise same-sex marriage. This was done this year itself, in the first half of 2022 and it was done after a referendum where the majority were in support of love.

8. Cuba

Despite an unusually strong and open albeit small resistance from the growing evangelical movement, Cuba allowed same-sex marriages. This was another victory in 2022 and it left the world smiling and hopeful.

These countries are setting an example for the world to discard the made-up rules of marriage and let love be free and this is bringing the necessary change in the society world over. Currently, same-sex marriage is under consideration under the legislature or the courts of many countries like the Czech Republic, Greece, Honduras, India, Liechtenstein, some states in Mexico, the Navajo Nation, Peru, Thailand and Venezuela. We can only hope that these countries allow same-sex marriages and let the power of love fly free, soon.
