August 9 is marked as Book Lovers Day which is an unofficial holiday. But if you ask me, it should be declared a bank holiday so that everyone is at home sitting and reading! Since that is not possible, mad readers like me have to take time out of their busy lives to read. Books are a human’s best friend, and I wholely and solely believe this. Whenever there is a book in my hand, I have never felt lonely. So, on Book Lovers Day, I am going to list down the things that readers love about books. And ones who have never read a book in their lives might want to start reading after this.

1. The smell of books

Every reader loves sniffing their books. That is literally the first thing we do before we start reading. We randomly open the book to any page and deeply inhale the woody smell of paper and press. Feels heavenly!

2. Seeing no stickers on books

You know when a book gets adapted into a show or a movie, the publishers immediately add a non-removable sticker on the cover. It is quite annoying because the sticker does not fit the aesthetic of the book, and it makes us immensely happy to see a book without one.

3. Having all books in the series of the same length

The Poppy War series by RF Kuang, The Bridge Kingdom series by Danielle L Jensen, and You by Caroline Kepnes are some of the book series which have books of varying lengths, and it is super frustrating to see that. So, when we see all books in a series of the same length, we heave a sigh of relief!

4. Having a blurb at the back of the book

Our decision of buying a book depends on the blurb of the book which is usually printed at the back. So, seeing the publishers have mentioned a blurb and not the book’s reviews makes us happy!

5.  Having a book on us everywhere we go

Knowing well that we have a book with us is such an assurance because you know you have a good friend to pass your time with in case your company or the party turns out to be boring.

6. Having bookshelves

A book lover will always love bookshelves, and will also have a particular design they want theirs to be in. So, if we visit someone’s house and see that they have a bookshelf, it makes us super happy.

7. Finishing a book

Now, this might be a little debatable because a lot of readers believe that their favourite books should never have ended. But on the other hand, finishing a book feels quite satisfactory because you have closure and know what ending each character got (fitting or not, that’s a different story), and also be happy to have been a part of that world.

8. Bumping into another reader on public transport

This is something I have experienced myself, and let me tell you, it feels so good to connect with a stranger who is also into books. That brief conversation we have about what we’re reading and what books we like feels so wholesome!

9. Uncracked spines

We hate having the spines of your books cracked. That is book brutality, as per us. So, we try not to crack the book spines and keep them tight and new as ever!

10. Never dog-earing pages

Dog-earing pages is another crime under book brutality which we cannot stand. So, we always use bookmarks or receipts or pencils to bookmark our books!
