Why Is It Okay To Shut Down “Public Places” For Private Events If You’re As Rich As The Ambani Parivaar?
The noise of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant's second pre-wedding bash has angered the local Italians and rightfully so!

A few weeks after the grand pre-wedding bash of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in Jamnagar, the Ambani Parivaar celebrated their son’s second “modern” pre-wedding in Italy on a star-studded Europe cruise. Anant Ambani’s pre-wedding party was set on a wave of everything big, promising A-list guests (the Backstreet Boys rocked!) like Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, and more. Their pre-wedding celebration reportedly involved renting out the entire Portofino seashore, leaving locals angered and tourists feeling like extras on their vacation. Nevertheless, for the people of Genoa, it became a night of unwanted noise pollution.

What’s The Discourse On The Ambani’s Pre-Wedding Cruise?
The cruise party turned into a floating disco while playing music so loud that it felt like a rock concert in the middle of a city. Frustrated residents bombarded emergency services with complaints about the music, but the party went on till dawn. This lead to the question – Should Ambani Parivaar’s infinite bank accounts grant them exclusive rights to such big public places?
A local firefighter summed up everyone’s frustration by saying, “They partied like they owned the whole city! Half of Genoa was kept awake by this concert-level noise all night. It finally stopped at dawn when everyone presumably jetted off on private planes. It’s unbelievable that even the port captain couldn’t shut down this inconsiderate noise pollution.” This shows the clash between opulent celebrations and the local communities. Even grand gestures can backfire if they disrupt the peace of an entire city.

With a lot of discourse over this topic on Reddit, people highlighted that they agreed with the inconvenience amongst the locals because there should also be a limit to the privilege a person shows off. A Redditor rightly pointed out that people living there have to face “casual racism” due to such things. A lot of them spoke in favour of Ambani’s stating that they had the permissions long before the event.
An estimated 1,200 guests including huge business leaders like Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, along with Hollywood celebrities like Adam Sandler, were a part of the grand pre-wedding event hosted by the Ambani Khandaan to celebrate Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s upcoming nupitals. However, the exclusivity of the event rubbed some locals the wrong way.
So, What Left The Locals Pissed Off At The Ambani Parivaar?
Sure, exclusivity has its advantages and allure. But the Ambani’s private takeover disrupted the everyday life of the locals leaving them feeling unwelcomed in their own town.
Supporters of the billionaire argued that they boost the economy. Sure, luxury shindigs do create jobs but when locals lose access to their basics like a street they walk on every day, the cost goes beyond financial loss. Back in 2018, when Isha Ambani’s wedding celebrations took place in my hometown Udaipur, the streets were packed and everyone was struggling to get home from their workplace. I promise you, it’s not fun.
The Common Ground (Without A Private Island):
Public spaces might rent out certain areas for events, reducing interference with daily operations and events could even help charities or local companies in the town. But ultimately, genuine luxury lies in utilizing your resources to enhance the locations you visit rather than isolating yourself from others. Everyone benefits from a more lively and welcoming environment when the beauty and fun are shared.
My 2 Cents On Anant Ambani, Radhika Merchant’s Pre-Wedding Cruise
While the Portofino finale offered an extravagant and unforgettable experience for the select guests and all the people hooked on to their phones, it also sparked a conversation about exclusivity and the impact of such large-scale events on local communities. After all, a perfect beach day shouldn’t require a private beach and a billion-dollar bank account.

An Italian local commented, “The picturesque of Portofino must be shared with everyone, but not just those who can afford to rent the whole city. It is heartbreaking that access wasn’t limited to other locals and tourists, in fact, we weren’t even allowed to get close.”

I’m sure the locals of Italy and tourists didn’t want a glimpse of the desi glamour of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s second pre-wedding event, instead they simply wanted to have their own time at the beaches and enjoy the beauty of the city that they live in or spent money to visit and explore. A celebration for us shouldn’t cause trouble for those around us. It’s only fair to live and let live. Okay, they have money to rent out the entire city but perhaps, a little courtesy for the locals who live there would’ve been nice. If you take over someone’s town for a day or two, at least don’t make it an uncomfortable time for them by creating chaos and unbearable noise pollution.
