There is always one or two things that the Koffee With Karan episode gets everyone talking about. Last season it was Hardik Pandya’s “aaj mai karke aaya comment” and in this season so far, the audience is already talking about suhaag-raat! This is because, in the very first episode of this season, Alia Bhatt busted a major myth saying she and Ranbir Kapoor did not celebrate their first night as they were too tired. This sparked a conversation like a wildfire on social media which was furthermore fuelled when Katrina Kaif, in the trailer of the Koffee With Karan upcoming episode, said that if people cannot celebrate suhaag-raat, then maybe, they can celebrate suhaag-din!
So, this revelation made by both Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif made us wonder whether now is the right time to bust some commonly believed myths surrounding suhaag-raat. So, here are, in no particular order of importance, some misconceptions about the first night that are well, just misconceptions.
You don’t always end up having sex
As much suhaag-raat essentially means the couple spending their first night after their wedding, this does not mean that they end up tangled in the sheets! This expectation that most couples have is quite true, actually. Given the hustle-bustle of the wedding day, you might be so drained by the time you reach your bedroom that you just want to sleep.
You will be removing the pins from your hair and dresses
Given how much the bride has to dress up on her wedding day, the number of pins that go into keeping the bun tucked in and the pleats proper are immeasurable! You and (hopefully) your husband will be plucking out all the pins from your outfit and hair and by the time you are done, you will most definitely be exhausted and want to hit the bed ASAP!
You need not consummate your marriage the very first night
If it is an arranged marriage, you might want to spend the night talking to each other. You might actually bond more in that one night than you would have ever in the course of your courtship. You might even get to know each other better!
Decorating the bed is kaafi filmy
Movies always show the newlywed couple’s bed and the room is all decorated with flowers. This normally does not happen in Indian households. And even if it does, you might want to clear the bed of all the phool-patti because they will make the bumpy making it hard to sleep on it.
It is okay to have sex a couple of days later
As long as both the bride and groom are comfortable, you guys can always choose to have sex a couple of days later, Or whenever you’ll find the comfort and time for it. Because even after the wedding, there are a couple of rituals that you have to participate in and it definitely takes a couple of days to wind up that part as well. So, sex can happen later and there is no problem at all with it!

Nobody gives you sly smiles the next day
Again, movies have ruined the whole concept of suhaag-raat for many. From teasing the couple before they enter the bedroom to giving them sly smiles the next day, movies have shown all of this to happen. But trust me, it does not happen so. You might wake up to a normal day with your family members not giving you the sly looks for getting the deed done.
It is not necessary that you get even to share the bed with your husband
Yes, you read that right! Many sub-cultures in our society have different rituals that are to be completed after the wedding as well. As per some of them, the bride might have to either sleep on a mattress laid out on the floor or even might have to sleep next to the mother-in-law! Quite bizarre, isn’t it?
So, ladies, films have glamorised everything that they tend to show and half of it is not how things are done in real life. It is always better and even advised to communicate about your suhaag-raat expectations with your partner so that neither you nor he is disappointed when the raat arrives!
