5 Thoughts I Had While Watching ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’ Trailer: Konkona, Bhumi Bat For Women’s Sexual Freedom!

When you tell me there is a movie that stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Bhumi Pednekar and Vikrant Massey, and is directed by Alankrita Shrivastava (Lipstick Under My Burkha, Made In Heaven), I’m already wet with excitement. But then you tell me that the film is about women finding their freedom, sexual freedom in particular, that’s a different kind of charam sukh for a movie buff! After teasing us with the title, poster and some character shots, Netflix has finally dropped the trailer for Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, and it has not disappointed us at all! The film which is produced by Balaji Telefilms (Udta Punjab, Veere Di Wedding) with music Arjuna Harjai, Clinton Cerejo and Sadhu S Tiwari by also stars Amol Parashar, Aamir Bashir, Kubbra Sait, Karan Kundra and Mushtaq Khan.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, the title itself sounds so intriguing, right? At first, I assumed it would be yet another story of two small-town women chasing their dreams. But the trailer changed that. The film is a story of two cousin sisters, Dolly played by Konkona Sen Sharma and Kajal aka Kitty, played by Bhumi Pednekar, each with their own issues about family, financial independence, and a thirst to explore their sexuality. While Dolly is a married, working mother, Kitty is new to the city and the independence that comes with a new job which isn’t exactly what most people would deem conventional or even respectable. There’s a weirdly alluring darkness that both these women must traverse in order to get to their ‘happy ending’, but as Kitty points out in one of the dialogues in the trailer, if you love the stars, you’ve got to wait until it’s dark to see them.

The trailer is super fun, and while we know the dark bits are coming, the witty dialogues keep us entertained. Here are five thoughts I had while watching the Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare trailer!

1. Bhumi Pednekar has the small-town girl act down pat! But this one comes with a twist!

I remember during the press screening for Sonchiriya, Bhumi Pednekar talked about how she has played this ‘village belle/small-town girl’ so often now! Be it Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Saand Ki Aankh or Pati Patni Aur Woh, her characters have almost always been women from rural India but with this drive to challenge the confines of rigid societal norms. However, here, Bhumi seems to have taken a leaf out of her BFF and co-star Ayushmann Khurrana’s book. Her character works in a call centre that offers female companionship, reminiscent of Ayushmann’s Pooja act from Dream Girl. But Kitty’s definitely got something more up her sleeve.

Speaking about her character, Bhumi has said, “With a head full of dreams and aspirations along with a carefree attitude, Kitty embarks on a new journey with her sister. She discovers herself and evolves as a person, all the while stumbling and tripping along the way, to finally understand what it really takes to make her dreams a reality.”

What I loved from the trailer was the fact that she has some of the best and funniest dialogues that she delivers with this poker face and the impact is amazing! Like the opening scene where she tells her Didi that her husband and Kitty’s ‘jiju’ wants to have sex with her! I was playing the trailer without headphones at full volume and I did not expect that!

2. Konkona Sen Sharma’s Dolly, though, is the character I am most intrigued about!

Both Bhumi and Konkona are brilliant actresses, hands down. But Dolly’s character is the one that I’m curious to see pan out. She is a wife and a mother, two roles that, let’s be honest, curb a woman’s desires because she’s often looking at herself from the eyes of her family. And yet, here is Dolly who goes on to have an extra-marital affair, because marital sex doesn’t do it for her anymore. It’s going to be interesting to see if she takes this step after she finds out what job her sister is doing and feels empowered somehow, or if it happens before, and she still judges Kitty for her ‘phone sex’ job and desire for financial independence.

Konkona says, “Dolly’s life is one we see so often—a bickering wife who is not satisfied with her husband’s unambitious ways, the mother of two young boys who she barely understands, all while dreaming of a life of luxury that is far beyond her reach. While she believes herself to be quite the rebel, she is blissfully unaware of how deeply conditioned she is in certain ways. It’s her journey of realization and to freedom that makes the story a fun yet heartwarming ride.”

Again, contrary to what people are writing in the comments, the story isn’t just about sex sex sex here. There are a lot more layers that get added on top, which I am hoping we find out when we watch the movie.

3. Vikrant Massey cuddling a red teddy bear is an image I’ll keep going back to.

Vikrant Massey is always a sight for sore eyes and his voice has a calming effect I can’t quite explain. His relationship with Kitty, from what I gather, starts in her workplace, as he seems to be one of her phone clients. How they end up meeting an being together is something I am dying to know, especially because there’s something fishy about just how perfect he is. We know that for sure since there is a scene where Bhumi Pednekar’s Kitty is extremely pissed at him for hiding something. Is he a married man? Does he have kids? Was he cheating in some other way with Kitty? Oooh this could get really meaty, especially for Kitty’s character development!

But yes, as I mentioned above, Vikrant Massey’s adorableness is unquestionable here!

4. These characters are written, directed and produced by women. And it really shows.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare is directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, produced by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms and has even its art and production design departments headed by women. While I’ve recently been re-educated on my belief that women tell women’s stories better (Sharan Sharma did a decent job with Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl), I do think they’re able to bring a certain authenticity and grit to female characters when they write them.

While I cannot say much about the characters in Dolly Kitty yet, I do see glimpses of that in the trailer. For example, the dialogues are witty and so relatable! What’s more, they bridge the illusionary gap that we assume is in the desires of women from small towns and big cities alike. When Bhumi’s Kitty says that she wishes there was a ‘companionship’ service for women as well, I felt that! The joy on Dolly’s face when she’s in bed with a man who can pleasure her right, or when she’s not being bogged by her responsibilities of being a mother and a wife are little things that real women have to struggle all their life for.

I am keen to see what other nuances the film brings forth with these characters, and whether they can adequately convey that a woman’s freedom struggle is a never-ending war of independence she must fight against not just the society but her loved ones too.

5. I’m so glad that mainstream cinema with mainstream actors is tackling a taboo subject like women’s sexuality.

Sure, we’ve had movies do this before, like Alankrita Shrivastava’s own Lipstick Under My Burkha. But Dolly Kitty feels more mainstream in the way it tackles the subject. Furthermore, it seems to do it in a way that is not too serious or preachy, and we know from experience that when films bring in an element of fun with supposedly taboo subjects like this one (Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan), the audience is more receptive to it.

Although, I know for a fact that the trailer has already managed to irk some people for being too sexually liberal (just check the comments on Instagram and you’ll know), I hope after watching the movie, the perspective transforms for some.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare will release on Netflix on September 18, 2020.
