It is Holi tomorrow, fellas, and many of you’ll must already be in the mood to play! I am sure you must have shopped for the colours and pichkaris as well! With Holi comes the festive spirit of colouring everyone in the colours of happiness and fun. Plus, Holi playlists are prepared and of course, the very common ones like ‘Balam Pichkari’ and ‘Badri Ki Dulhaniya’ are at the top of it. And anyone with half a mind will realise from the lyrics that most of the Holi songs are sexist AF, including these two mentioned above! After much digging, I have found five songs for Holi that are non-sexist, which make me realise astonishingly low the number is!
‘Jai Jai Shiv Shankar’ – Aap Ki Kasam (1974)
This classic track which is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar remains a shit even today. the chemistry between Zeenat Mumtaaz and Rajesh Khanna is just so cute! The almost six-minute song does not have any sexist lyrics but rather is all about the aftermath of having too much bhaang!
‘Lahu Muh Lag Gaya’ – Ram Leela (2013)
Uff, this song remains a forever favourite irrespective of Holi! The chemistry between Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh might just set the screen on fire! You can definitely recreate the spice from this song with your partner this Holi!
‘Mohe Rang Do Laal’ – Bajirao Mastani (2015)
Sung by Shreya Ghoshal, Mohe Rang Do Laal is a sweet and sensual song that lovers can play their Holi to! Rang do apne partner ko laal with this song playing in the background, and get in the mood for festive spirit!
‘Jai Jai Shivshankar’ – War (2019)
Sung by Vishal Dadlani and Benny Dayal, this song is a pure dance number! With the lyrics only urging people to dance jam jam ke! You can safely play this track on your Holi paw-ri!
‘Rangisari’ – Jugjugg Jeeyo (2022)
Sung by Kanishk Seth and Kavita Seth, this song is such a party vibe! Groove with your friends and partner to this song, and have a non-sexist Holi, doston!

These five songs are, no doubt, great songs and non-offensive as well which makes me happy but at the same time, it sheds light on how less this number is! Why can’t we have better Holi songs that everyone can enjoy without spoiling the spirit of the festival. While you must be thinking that how you only play these 5 songs on a loop on Holi, please, friends, understand the message I am giving you here. Even if you play those other songs, keep consent in mind, peeps! Do not colour anyone if they say no. Don’t go all ‘bura mat maano, Holi hain!‘ Understand boundaries because you are human beings and not animals.
