If you’ve been dreaming about that sun-kissed, ultra-dewy glow from The White Lotus season 3, you’re not alone. Shot in the steamy heat of Thailand, the show’s beauty looks feel effortless, luxurious, and just the right amount of vacation glam. But according to the makeup artist behind the magic, pulling that off wasn’t as easy as it looked. In an interview with The Cut, Rebecca Hickey revealed the following details,
Tropical heat and full glam don’t exactly go hand in hand. “The heat in Thailand was something else,” the artist shared. “There’s constant sweating you really just have to surrender to it.” But instead of fighting it, the team leaned into the climate, designing makeup that worked with the weather, not against it. So how did they manage to make everyone look fresh and radiant in 90% humidity?
1) Skincare first, always
According to the artist, the foundation of every look began with great skincare. “If your skin is healthy and hydrated, you don’t need as much coverage,” she said. The idea was to enhance what was already there, not mask it. That meant prioritizing hydration and sun protection every single day on set. Lightweight textures ruled the makeup chair no heavy foundations or matte powders that would just melt off.
2) Less is more in tropical weather
Base makeup was kept sheer and breathable. Think tinted serums, skin tints, and concealers only where needed. The goal? Let the skin’s natural texture shine through while still looking polished. Dewy highlighters were used strategically to enhance that “just stepped out of the sun” glow without going overboard.
Touch-ups happened constantly sometimes as often as every 30 minutes. “Even if it meant more work for us, we didn’t want to sacrifice the glamour,” the artist explained. “It’s still TV, after all.”
3) SPF was non-negotiable
Given the long hours outdoors, sun protection was a big deal on set. Sunscreen was worked into everyone’s base routine, reapplied throughout the day, and even layered into powders and finishing sprays. “The actors were really careful with the sun,” she noted. “We were constantly tossing sunscreen sprays and powders around, using umbrellas, whatever we could do.”
4) On-set skin tools and treatments
While facials weren’t really an option due to the heat and packed schedules, the cast had plenty of access to at-home devices. Think cooling rollers, LED masks, and gentle skincare tools that helped keep skin calm between takes. “Everyone women and men, was very mindful of their skin,” she said. “We always had options available during breaks.”
The White Lotus season 3 ended with a shocking finale on April 6, 2025 on HBO.
