Skin tints are really having their moment, everyone seems to be ditching foundations for these lightweight, sheer formulas. And I get it. The idea of a no-makeup makeup look is appealing. Who wouldn’t want to look like they’re glowing from within while still feeling like their skin can breathe? But here’s the thing skin tints just don’t work for me. As a brown girl, my relationship with makeup is a little more complicated. My skin isn’t the type that can get away with a your skin but better product. I’ve got hyperpigmentation, acne scars, uneven tone you name it.
Why Skin Tints Aren’t The Best For Brown Skin?
A skin tint’s whole selling point is being sheer and giving you that barely there look. But on my skin, barely there just means my imperfections are still front and center. I’ve tried. Believe me, I’ve tried to make skin tints work. The beauty world convinced me I was missing out. So, I bought one of those fancy, hyped-up ones that everyone raves about. The first time I applied it, I was excited. It felt so lightweight and blended beautifully into my skin. But then I looked in the mirror and thought, Wait, is this it? It looked like I had done absolutely nothing to my face. All my scars and uneven patches were still visible, and my skin just looked dull.
Don’t get me wrong skin tints are great for people with even-toned skin. If your only concern is a little redness or wanting to even things out a tiny bit, they’ll probably work wonders for you. But for someone like me, who wants coverage? A skin tint just doesn’t cut it. The thing is, I don’t want to hide my brown skin; I want to enhance it. And to feel confident, I need something that gives me more coverage while still looking natural. Foundations with a medium, buildable formula are my go-to. They help even out my skin tone without making me feel cakey or overly done up. Skin tints, on the other hand, seem like they’re designed for people who already have flawless skin and that’s just not me.
What frustrates me the most is the way beauty brands market skin tints. They’re always described as this universal product that works for everyone. But let’s be honest: the beauty industry still caters to a specific type of skin usually lighter, usually more even-toned. For a lot of us with darker skin and pigmentation issues, these so-called universal products fall short.

So, no, I’m not hopping on the skin tint bandwagon. I’ll stick to my foundations, thank you very much. Because at the end of the day, I want makeup that makes me feel confident in my skin not like I’m trying to force a product to work for me when it clearly wasn’t made with me in mind. And that’s okay. Not every trend is for everyone, and that’s a lesson I’ve learned to embrace.
