Q. You’ve worked with numerous celebrities like Sonam Kapoor and created stunning looks. Can you share a BTS story of an iconic look that was particularly challenging or memorable for you?

Namrata – One of my toughest looks was for Cannes. Sonam wore an Anamika sari with a bold winged liner and a berry lip. It was a challenge because we aimed to represent India internationally. Uncertainty surrounded its acceptance, but we chose a dramatic Indian style with an exaggerated winged liner and lip. The rainy festival day added to the challenge. It was both thrilling and daunting to present our Indian touch in an international setting.

Q. As a makeup artist, you’ve undoubtedly experimented with various makeup trends. What’s a bold makeup trend you’ve always wanted to try on a celebrity but haven’t had the chance to do so yet?

Namrata – I’ve experimented with almost everything, honestly. The only trend I’m not a fan of is baking, which involves heavy powdering under the eyes. I haven’t experimented with it on anyone as it’s not something I personally prefer.

Q. You and Sonam Kapoor are a dream collaboration. Can you let us in on the one thing/tip that is a non-negotiable when you create a look for Sonam?

Namrata –Being there for Sonam is non-negotiable. We both prioritize being there for each other, no matter what. When she needs me, I’m always available, especially for important moments. It’s as important as my commitment to my husband.

Q. How was the makeup industry when you first started out, and what’s the biggest change that you see today?

Namrata –Back then, the makeup industry was male-dominated. I was among the second or third women entering as makeup artists. It was challenging due to union rules that discouraged women from doing makeup and men from doing hair. Directors and actors later supported us, but before that, we had to hide in vanity vans to work. Fighting for our rights, we eventually won in the Supreme Court. When it comes to change the makeup style was bold and Bollywood-inspired, until movies like Aisha showcased a different, subtler approach.

Q. We often see you work your magic on others, but what’s your personal favorite makeup look or beauty ritual that you indulge in for yourself?

Namrata – My favourite look is the no-makeup makeup style. I adore clean beauty with defined lashes using mascara and a bold lip, often in orange or red for a statement. It’s my go-to, along with contouring and blush to add a soft glow without heavy makeup.

Q. Launching your own makeup line, Simply Nam, must have been an exciting journey. How has that changed your relationship with other beauty brands that you work with as an MUA?

Namrata – Launching my own makeup line has been thrilling, involving hard work and an amazing journey. Despite owning my brand, I’m still a makeup artist at heart. Other brands approach me for social media collaborations, and I appreciate that. I don’t want to focus solely on my brand; I endorse products I genuinely love, whether from Mac, Bobby Brown, Tom Ford, Anastasia, L’Oreal, Maybelline, or others. It’s my duty to ensure accurate information reaches everyone.

Q. Can you share an unconventional beauty tip or hack that you swear by and think more people should know about?

Namrata – I love an age-old remedy: Red Chandan with rose water. I use it weekly, mixing a bit of pure red chandan with rose water and applying it to my skin. It’s my go-to to add moisture and protect my skin. In today’s busy life with lots of coffee, tea, and less water, this remedy keeps my skin well-hydrated.

Q. We beauty junkies are constantly scrolling Instagram reels and makeup vlogs for Inspo. If we opened Namrata Soni’s phone, what content/creators would we see the most?

Namrata – Oh my God, there are so many! I’m a fan of some Indian influencers like Shireen, Sharla, and others. I admire young girls who fearlessly experiment and explore various beauty trends. These emerging makeup artists inspire me as the industry evolves with new hacks and changes every day. It’s exciting to keep up with the industry’s dynamic path.

Q. With social media playing a huge role in the beauty industry, how do you navigate the pressure of creating picture-perfect looks while still promoting self-love and embracing individuality?

Namrata – Maintaining authenticity is tough. On my Instagram, I go for a no-filter approach. No touchups either, whether for celebrities, brides, or clients. People hire me for my skills, not filtered images. Using filters might bring initial attention, but word-of-mouth matters more. People can spot discrepancies between online and real-life looks. Honesty matters on social media.

Q. In the world of makeup artistry, collaborations can be exciting. Is there a dream collaboration with a celebrity or brand you’ve always wanted to explore?

Namrata – So many celebrity makeup artists inspire me. I’ve admired them since my makeup journey began. I’d cherish a collaboration with legends like Pat McGrath or Val Garland. Kevin A Coyne was another idol who influenced my career. Although he’s no longer with us, he was brilliant. Watching these icons create is fascinating—they shape trends without hindrance.

Q. Creating an iconic look involves more than just makeup. Can you share some lesser-known aspects of the process, such as collaborating with hairstylists and stylists to bring a cohesive vision to life?

Namrata – When crafting looks for events like Cannes or red carpets, collaboration is vital. The head stylist, makeup artist, and clothes stylist work together. The first step is understanding the outfit’s details: neckline, shoulders, etc. This guides the style. We decide whether the makeup should be bold, avant-garde, or harmonious. For instance, if it’s an Indian or saree outfit, we may emphasize the eyes with drama or colour, while keeping hair clean. Sometimes, hair takes a back seat, and the focus is on natural, subtle highlights. This approach holds whether it’s bridal, red carpet, or fashion looks.

Q. Throughout your illustrious career, you’ve witnessed the beauty industry evolve in many ways. What’s one positive change that’s still elusive and hasn’t happened yet that you’d like to see?

Namrata – I believe in embracing “less is more.” Trends and TikTok can be captivating, but not all makeup suits everyone. Some clients request heavy makeup, but it’s important to understand what suits you. Accepting one’s skin colour is crucial. In our country, buying lighter foundations persists due to colour biases. I wish for people to embrace their natural skin tone. We have beautiful skin colours, and it’s time to appreciate and celebrate them, rather than trying to change them.

Q. Historically, if there was one makeup look that you had to deem as the G.O.A.T (Greatest of all time), what would it be and why?

Namrata – My favourite look is winged eyeliner and red lip. I adore it—it’s universally flattering. Just tailor the liner to your eye shape. It can be subtle or bold. My goal is to find the perfect red lip for everyone. It’s my go-to choice for a stunning look.
