Laser Hair Removal: The Answers To EVERY Question You Have

Laser Hair Removal: The Answers To EVERY Question You Have

Thinking of opting for laser hair removal? We get it, in fact, I’ve done it! Why wouldn’t you? It’s permanent, almost painless, and super effective. Before you walk into a clinic or before they rope you into a discount scheme, there are a few things you should know.

Since a couple of friends and I have done laser hair removal on various parts of our bodies, I’ve pooled in all of our knowledge to list down a few pointers on the things you should know before opting for laser hair removal.

1. What does laser hair removal actually involve?

The energy of the laser hits the pigment in the hair, and so, destroys the hair from its root. Due to this process, sometimes laser can be more effective on darker hair, stubble, or ingrown hair. There are a few different types of lasers. Your doctor will recommend what’s best for you. Don’t be afraid to ask about why it is beneficial for you and what the various price points are.

Nd:YAG is known to be more effective on darker hair, as compared to lighter hair. It is safe to use on all skin types, including tanned skin. Diode is effective on all types of hair and skin, but you might have to do some tests to figure if it’s safe for your skin. Alexandrite laser is super fast and works best on light-to-olive complexions. Each year, there are advances with these lasers, and usually, doctors have the most cutting edge new laser technology. Once you know this, asking questions becomes easier.

2. I found a clinic that has an offer on laser hair removal treatment. Should I go for it?

Make sure you consult with a dermatologist before beginning any laser hair removal. All clinics will have an in-house dermat that you can talk to, ask questions to, and make sure you’re getting the best laser for your hair removal needs. If you’re not satisfied, or have more concerns, I suggest not hurrying into a scheme that they’re offering you.

Consult more than one dermatologist at more than one clinic. Read reviews online and talk to friends who have had this done before. It’s best to be as informed as possible.

3. Where does  it work? And how much do you actually require?

Well, you can do it on any body part, really. Many opt for full body laser. But, it is more effective on areas that may be more heavily pigmented, like your chin, upper lip, bikini area, underarms. Even an area like your underarms may take about 5 to 15 sittings, depending on your body’s reaction, to complete the course. This could be over in 6 months to 1 year’s time. Most clinics will sell packages that offer discounts for multiple sittings.

4. How do I know whether it will be effective? Does it last forever?

So, if you have hormonal hair growth, dark patches, ingrown hair… this is perfect for you! And even if you don’t, it’ll definitely work well in the above mentioned areas. That being said, in most places and even within the areas mentioned, you may have to do a session of laser about every 2 years. At least that’s what I’ve found in my experience. You may still have very light, sparse hair growth that can be shaved. Waxing and threading post laser is an absolute no. Shaving works well, since the hairs will have already become super light.

5. What care do I need to take?

Yes, it does hurt a little. Depending on your pain resistance, it may feel like small electric currents running through the skin on that area. But, it is less painful than most hair removal methods.

6. What care do I need to take?

For about a week post laser, you don’t want to scrub hard or use any AHA / Retinol-based products on that area, as it may be sensitive. Hair will fall off slowly over the week, and you may notice it. Always remember to apply sunscreen to the area.

Most importantly, listen to your practitioner and complete the entire recommended course for best results!
