Here’s The LEGIT Way To Do Minimalist Beach Waves

When my Editor first told me about this new technique to curl hair with a flat iron, I tried very hard not to roll my eyes. Call me cynical, but I’ve been lured far too many times into checking out videos/articles that rave about radical new techniques in heat styling only to find that the whole world and its sister have been doing it for a LONG time.

It takes a lot to get me excited these days, and I take anything labelled “new” with a healthy dose of scepticism. Nevertheless I clicked on the video she showed me half-heartedly, fully expecting some ancient technique that would make my eyes glaze over in boredom. To say that I was blown away by what I saw would be an understatement. Nicci Welsh, a celebrity hairstylist from Denmark, calls her technique the “S Wave” or “Scandi Wave”. It’s a natural, loose wave that looks delightfully grunge-y; perfectly in time for the 90s revival.

What sets this technique apart from everything you’ve seen so far is the way Welsh moves the straightener. Instead of sliding it along the length of the hair and twisting it around the straightener, Welsh takes a 1- to 2-inch section of hair, bends it into an ‘S’ shape, then taps (that’s right, taps) the flat iron over it to set it. She pushes the hair in alternate directions with every bend all the way down to the ends.

This technique gives you minimalist beach waves (IMO, they look more grungy than beachy), without creating a lot of volume. The fact that the waves are not voluminous and are loose make them look so 90s to me and that’s why it appeals to me so much. Also, you have full control over how big you want your waves to be and exactly how you want them to frame your face, which is something you can’t do with curlers or other flat iron techniques.
