In an exclusive interview with Hauterrfly, celebrity makeup artist Tanvi Chemburkar, known for working with Bollywood stars like Kareena Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Janhvi Kapoor, shared her invaluable tips on choosing the right foundation for brown skin tones. For Tanvi, a strong foundation routine starts with understanding the nuances of skin tones and choosing products tailored to individual needs.
Tanvi Chemburkar Shares Foundation Hack
Tanvi believes a high-quality concealer can make a world of difference, especially for those who prefer a more natural look. “Get a really good concealer. It solves 90 per cent of your problems,” she advised, explaining that concealers help cover up common skin concerns like dark circles and pigmentation. In fact, she often skips foundation herself and relies on concealer for under-eye coverage and around the mouth area, where she experiences some discoloration.
When it comes to choosing a foundation, Tanvi stressed the importance of matching on the jawline, which closely reflects the natural tone of the face. Her method involves applying a line across the jawline and opting for a shade that is slightly warmer. “The best way to match it is by, you know, striking it, striking a line across your jawline because that’s very close to your face that will give you the perfect shade and go half a shade warmer. People tend to, feel that, oh, we want to look brighter. We want to look brighter and they end up going a shade lighter”, Tanvi further explained, “That is your biggest mistake because over a period of time that oxidizes, that starts looking gray. And your skin will look off. There are very few people in India that I know have like one tone all over their face. Everyone has like, you know, a little discoloration. So go half a shade or one shade warmer.”

Winter Woes and Undertones
Discussing how foundation shades can sometimes turn orange in the winter, Tanvi pointed out that understanding undertones is essential. “If you are yellow, go for a more yellow side don’t go orange,” she explained. For those uncertain, Tanvi recommends swatching three shades on the jawline to find the best match.
Tanvi has one golden rule for foundation shoppers: patience. She encourages her clients to test the foundation on their skin and wait at least 30 minutes to see how it settles. “Foundations aren’t cheap,” she added, advising shoppers to apply the product on half of their face and assess the result after it settles. According to Tanvi, this practice helps avoid costly mistakes and ensures a long-lasting, suitable match.
