In an exclusive chat with Hauterrfly, celebrity makeup artist Tanvi Chemburkar, known for her work with stars like Kareena Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna, shared her thoughts on the most common festive makeup mistakes and how to avoid them. With the festive season in full swing, everyone wants to look their best, but there are key dos and don’ts when it comes to makeup, according to the expert.
Tani Chemburkar On Festive Makeup Mistakes
One of the biggest mistakes Tanvi highlights is the overuse of shimmery and glittery eyeshadow. “Shimmery, glittery eyes are a big no,” she says, explaining that while shimmer has its place in festive looks, it should be used tactfully. For her, the key lies in balance—especially if your outfit already has a lot of sparkle. “If your outfit is really shimmery and glittery, don’t go for equally glitzy eyes. You’ll end up looking like a Christmas tree!” Tanvi advises that if you’re wearing a more subtle, sober outfit, you can experiment with shimmery eyes. But the bottom line? Don’t overdo it.
Another common mistake Tanvi encounters during the festive season is people matching their eyeshadow to their outfit. “It’s a big no-no for me,” she stresses. Matching your eye makeup to the colour of your lehenga or saree might seem like a good idea, but it often doesn’t work in reality. In fact, Tanvi recalls how challenging it used to be to convince clients that a pink eyeshadow with a pink outfit just wasn’t the right move.
Instead of matching colours directly, Tanvi suggests going for complementary shades. “All Indian outfits have color and metallic shades, so try and pull the metallic tone to apply on the eyes,” she advises. If you’re wearing pink and really want to incorporate that into your makeup, she suggests using it on the lips or cheeks rather than the eyes. For example, if you’re wearing a bright “Rani pink” outfit, opt for a softer metallic pink on the eyes, which will create harmony without overwhelming your look.
Tanvi’s biggest takeaway? Don’t be afraid to play with makeup during the festive season, but do so with care. Use shimmer and color to enhance, not overshadow, your outfit.
