#AskHauterfly: What Are The Different Types Of Lipstick Finishes?

By  |

Last week, we took you through the whirlwind of various lip products that are available in the market, and if that didn’t blow your mind…then this definitely will.

Each lip product in stick or liquid form comes with its own finish, and trust us when we say that each of those gives off a different look.

If you are a lippy fan like the #HauteSquad, and are a little confused about the finish each lipstick has, well then, that’s what we’re here for.

We’re going to take you on a journey through the ins and outs of lipsticks. So be prepared to enter the fascinating world of perfect pouts!

1. Glossy

Let’s start with the basics — as the name suggests, this lipstick gives off a gloss, almost glass-like finish. These lipsticks fall under a classic category, especially when used with shades of red or maroon.

Glossy lipsticks look gorgeous for an evening event, as they give off a classy, elegant look. They also provide a plump effect to thinner lips!

However, since they are more fluid in texture, they tend to smear, smudge, and bleed quite easily, so be a bit wary once applied!

2. Creamy

This lipstick glides on smoothly and provides a sheer creamy finish of the product pigment. The texture isn’t glossy, but this one is basically a muted version of the glossy lipstick.

If you have dry lips, this one would be apt to suit your lippy needs — the perfect in-between!

3. Satin

A satin finish is one that’s not matte nor creamy — it falls in between the two. They go on smoothly and have a slight sheen on the lips, providing great opaque coverage on the lips.

The great thing about a satin finish is that it isn’t super drying. It gives a considerate yet minimal amount of shine to the lips, making it day appropriate too.

4. Matte

One of the most popular lip finishes currently, matte lipsticks basically do not contain any form of sheen, shine, or cream — in other words, it’s only the flat pigment that stands out!

Matte lipsticks are a lot more long-lasting than the others in the lot, but they can dry out your lips.

The longevity is what makes them the perfect partner-in-crime on a regular basis — just remember to prime with a moisturiser or lip balm prior to application so that your lips don’t get too dry.

Some matte lipsticks also come with a velvety finish, which makes the texture look a lot softer.

5. Shimmer

As the name suggests, shimmer means there are elements of glitter and shine present in the pigment of the lipstick.

This adds a bit of dazzle and highlights the lips, especially when light hits your pout. Again, totally suited for a formal evening event, if you need that subtle bling factor.
