This year, every time I opened Instagram, I felt like I was being hit with a wave of cosmetic treatment posts. From CO2 laser treatments to PRP therapy, lip fillers, Botox, rhinoplasty, and even blepharoplasty, it seemed like everyone especially creators were getting something done and by something I mean cosmetic treatments. And they weren’t shy about sharing it either. My feed was full of before-and-after reels, detailed captions about their journey, and endless comments hyping them up.
Beauty Surgeries Feel Like FOMO Now
As someone who writes about beauty for a living, it’s literally my job to stay updated on trends. So naturally, I dove deep into the world of cosmetic treatments this year, researching everything I saw. But somewhere between reading about the latest liquid nose job and seeing another post about subtle tweakments, I started to feel a little left out. Like, why wasn’t I getting anything done? Was I missing out on some magical beauty glow-up club?
Don’t get me wrong I’m not against these procedures. In fact, I think it’s amazing how far beauty science has come. But seeing everyone enhance their features while I’m just sitting here with my basic skincare routine made me feel like I was falling behind. Suddenly, I was questioning things I’d never even noticed before. Is my nose a little too wide? Could my under-eye bags use some filler? And don’t even get me started on my forehead lines.
What really got to me, though, was how normal all of this has become. Cosmetic procedures, which used to feel so extreme or hush-hush, are now as casual as getting a haircut. It’s like, Oh, you haven’t tried Botox yet? You should totally do it before 30. And the FOMO? It’s real. I found myself daydreaming about what I’d look like post-treatment or scrolling late at night through clinic reviews. But then the practical side of me kicks in: Do I really need these things? Or am I just being influenced by the perfectly filtered world of social media?
For now, I’m sticking to my usual routine and reminding myself that beauty isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing. But wow, 2024 really tested my self-confidence and my willpower to not book an appointment.
