Beauty hacks are fun, aren’t they? A quick scroll on Instagram can give you tips to make your makeup last longer, fix uneven eyeliner, or even repurpose random household items for skincare. But sometimes, these hacks cross a line. Case in point: people using intimate lubricant as a face primer. Yes, lube. For your face.
Lube As Primer For Makeup
A primer is meant to create a smooth canvas for your makeup. It minimizes the appearance of pores and helps your foundation glide on effortlessly. Sounds simple, right? Well, apparently not simple enough, because someone somewhere decided that using lube the kind meant for the bedroom would be a better alternative. This trend has been floating around in the West for a while now, but it hit Indian beauty circles hard after an influencer, Arnakshi Patgiri, posted a video on Instagram. She explained that lube, because it’s water-based, works well for her acne-prone skin and doesn’t irritate it. Her followers were quick to react some were curious, others were shocked, and of course, a few took it as an opportunity to make inappropriate jokes.
To be fair, water-based lubes are typically formulated to be gentle, and they do have a slippery texture that could mimic that silky primer feeling. But does that mean we should use it on our faces? Let me put it this way: just because you cando something doesn’t mean you should.
First off, lubes aren’t tested or designed for your face. Yes, they might be safe for delicate areas, but your facial skin is different. It has unique needs, and layering it with products meant for another purpose can lead to clogged pores, irritation, or even breakouts. And while Arnakshi says it works for her, skincare and makeup aren’t one-size-fits-all.
Secondly, let’s not forget the tackiness—both literal and metaphorical. Imagine explaining to someone that the secret to your flawless makeup is, well, lube. It’s the kind of trend that’s more about shock value than practicality. Plus, we already have plenty of primers on the market tailored to different skin types. Whether you need mattifying, hydrating, or pore-blurring formulas, there’s something for everyone.
Lastly, let’s talk about hygiene. Products formulated for your face go through rigorous testing to ensure they’re non-comedogenic, safe for sensitive skin, and compatible with other makeup products. Lube? Not so much.

Look, I get it. The beauty world is full of experimentation, and sometimes trying weird hacks can be fun. But this is one trend that’s more cringe than clever. There’s no need to smear something meant for your love life all over your face just because it’s “viral.” Let’s stick to primers that are actually meant for makeup and leave the lube where it belongs. So can we collectively agree to move on from this and focus on trends that don’t make us question our life choices? Please?
