It is 2018, and many Indians are still obsessed with the idea of fair skin; it sickens me to the core when people pass comments about someone’s skin tone or complexion. I reckon I will never be able to understand our obsession with white skin.

But times are changing for the better, ladies, and we are ecstatic to know that there is some hope. Recently, Kai Po Che actor, Sushant Singh Rajput, refused to endorse a fairness advertisement deal worth Rs 15 crore.

Sushant Singh Rajput

The actor’s source told a leading daily that he thought it was his duty as an actor to not promote incorrect messages. The brand wanted him to sign a deal of six advertisements over a span of three years, but the actor decided not to take up this offer. However, Rajput is not the first Bollywood celebrity to refuse such a lucrative deal. Here are some other celebrities who decided not to endorse fairness products.

Ranbir Kapoor

The Ae Dil Hai Mushkil actor refused a similar ad because he thinks that it does nothing but deepen racism.

The Queen rejected a deal of Rs 2 crore as she does not want to set a bad example for younger people. She believes that as a public figure, she has certain responsibilities.

Randeep Hooda

Hooda was offered an endorsement for a fairness cream for men, but he said that he does not understand or endorse the obsession with fairness. He also said that beauty is not all about fair skin.

Kalki has had our hearts ever since she stepped into Bollywood. She did not reject an ad offer, per se, but she once said in a discussion that she would never endorse a fairness brand.

Anushka Sharma

In 2015, Anushka Sharma told the press that she would never endorse products that propagate racist and sexist beliefs, and social taboo.

Swara Bhaskar

The actress was offered a deal to feature in a fairness cream ad in 2015. She rejected the offer, saying that the very idea of fairness creams is regressive and plants the seed of racism.

We hope that the obsession with fair complexion goes away. Girls, whether you are fair, dark, wheatish, or dusky, you are beautiful—do not let anyone else tell you otherwise!
