I find it infinitely easier to highlight than contour my face, because the risk of ending up with a muddy-looking complexion is exceptionally high. In fact, if I remember right, the first few times I tried contouring my face my mum actually thought my face was bruised!

The year 2015 gave us a new term to obsess over — strobing — and I’m completely on board with the trend. Strobing (a fancier term for highlighting) as a makeup technique is going pretty strong and from the looks of it, highlighters are only gaining in popularity. How else can you explain every brand coming out with their own highlighting products that promise to turn you into a glowing goddess?

I think highlighters are a godsend when you’re running out of time (which is, like, always!), because their reflective properties distract the eye from your problem areas and you can even skip concealer. It also adds dimension to the face so you can forgo the bronzer. Highlighters are just the pick-me-up your face needs on rushed mornings. All you have to so is swipe some across the high points of your face and voila!

While considerably easier than contouring, highlighting is not fool-proof. The best places to highlight are the brow bone right under the arch, the inner corners of your eyes, the high points of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose (skip the tip), and the Cupid’s bow. Applying a tiny bit in the centre of the eyelids opens up your eyes in the most natural way. When used judiciously, highlighters can divert attention from dark circles, and actually give your face some lift.
